How is a gold coin's melt value calculated?+
By its actual gold weight (AGW), not its face value. A 1 oz American Gold Eagle contains 1 troy ounce of gold even though the coin is 22k; a $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle contains 0.9675 oz. Multiply AGW by the live gold spot price.
Do pre-1933 U.S. gold coins trade at melt?+
Often above it. Double Eagles, Eagles, and Half Eagles are collectible and usually carry a numismatic premium over their gold content, so melt is a floor, not the market price.
What's AGW?+
Actual Gold Weight — the pure gold content of a coin. It's what matters for melt value, regardless of the coin's purity or face value.
